The mission of Highmark Health is to make high quality health care easily accessible, understandable and affordable. In carrying out this mission, we strive to preserve the tradition and reputation that we have built upon our high ethical standards.

Building a strong reputation is difficult but losing it is easy. That is particularly true today as the health care industry, including health insurers, is under increasing scrutiny. Questionable or unlawful acts quickly erode public confidence, causing health care consumers to lose trust.

We recognize that it isn't enough to merely comply with laws and regulations but imperative to abide by the highest ethical standards in serving our customers and community and dealing with our fellow employees. Therefore, it is important that we don't lose sight of one basic principle of integrity — "We care not just for the end result but also for how it's obtained." This means that we conduct ourselves with integrity in everything we do.

Our integrity process sets the ethical tone for conducting business and creates a corporate culture that enhances the reputation of our enterprise. A major component of the integrity process is the Code of Business Conduct. The responsibilities and expectations found in the Code of Business Conduct aren't new, but they form the backbone of our ethical culture. In fact, over the years, they have become the cornerstones of our commitment to integrity and part of our core values. We invite you to review these standards and hold us to them. Integrity Principles

HM Health Solutions employees should follow the code of conduct of the parent company, Highmark Health.

Our principles of integrity serve as a path to what is proper in most work situations, regardless of the job at hand:

  • Personal and professional integrity is and has been our most important attribute.
  • We care not just for the end result but also for how it's obtained.
  • We are honest and forthright and observe all laws and regulations, but lawful behavior isn't quite enough. Ethical behavior is our standard.
  • We trust our instincts to tell us that something isn't quite right, and we ask questions whenever in doubt as to the proper course of action.
  • Customer, provider and supplier relations are the cornerstones of our business. They must be built upon credibility and mutual respect.
  • We demand ethical conduct in all our activities.
  • We always do the right thing.

Integrity Process

Our integrity process is the ethical framework for our company and fosters teamwork, pride and excellence in attaining our goals. It consists of the principles of integrity and the Code of Business Conduct.

Our focus on integrity and compliance ensures that we operate legally and ethically in our business conduct every day. Following the integrity process in all our business activities enables us to comply with all applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations including:

  • Licensure limitations and requirements
  • State insurance department laws and regulations
  • Intellectual property laws
  • Privacy and security laws
  • Government contract laws and regulations
  • As stringent corporate governance guidelines, the integrity process demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards of business ethics and compliance, including in our government business.

Corporate Compliance and Governance

Our Integrity and Compliance Department, under the direction of the Chief Compliance Officer, has overall responsibility for administering our integrity process, including the Code of Business Conduct.

Our board of directors appoints the chief compliance officer. To ensure a high degree of autonomy for the integrity process, the chief compliance officer reports directly to our president and chief executive officer as well as to the board. In addition, both the audit committee of the board of directors and the compliance committee provide guidance and oversight for the chief compliance officer. The compliance committee comprises senior management, the president and chief executive officer and the chairman of the board of directors.
