EMERGING LEADERS SOAR AT HM HEALTH SOLUTIONS
HM Health Solution's Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) gives bachelor- and master-level graduates entry into the health care IT field. In fact, many are accepted into the program months before they graduate, giving them a lot of relief in a competitive job market—and bragging rights over their peers.
ACCEPTED CANDIDATES COMPLETE MULTIPLE ROTATIONS IN TWO YEARS
Candidates who are accepted into the program spend two years completing multiple rotations across the various areas of the business. After they successfully complete the program, ELP associates are placed into roles that draw on their diverse experiences and broad company knowledge. The learning experiences for "ELPs," as program participants are called, are vast. And having this steady stream of new talent is a great advantage for the organization.
Like other job seekers, ELPs go through a competitive application and interview process. Each year, about 20 ELPs are chosen to form a cohort. As they take on work responsibilities, ELPs have the support of their classmates, who are making the journey from student to professional together. On the job, ELPs gain a range of technical skills and soft skills when working on, and even leading, project teams.
ROTATION PROVIDES BROADER ORGANIZATIONAL UNDERSTANDING
Each ELP is assigned to four different rotations over the course of two years. Each assignment falls into one of the following tracks: Application Development, Information Technology Operations and Security, and Project Management and Business Analysis. When they complete their rotations and are ready take the next step in their HM Health Solutions career, ELPs have a broader organizational understanding, which can influence where they move in the company. Their placement when they leave the program meets the staffing needs of the company, while focusing on the individual's skills and growth opportunities.
IT IS ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE AND FUTURE LEADERSHIP
Maria Baker, manager of workforce planning, oversees the Emerging Leaders Program. She says, "At HM Health Solutions, ELP associates often spend time in four completely different areas of the organization and build a strong foundational understanding of our company. ELPs see the bigger picture, and they form a unique talent pool that helps position us with a solid base of future leaders."
Jerome Dopkin is an ELP, and he says that program leaders have supported him during his time in the program: "I wanted to go to Consulting, and they helped make it happen. I wanted to learn Tableau and data analytics, and they helped make it happen and even sent me to a Tableau conference. They have supported me in ‘writing my own story’ and allowing me to pursue my intellectual curiosity, which has given me a skill set I never imagined I would have. And the program has made me loyal to this company."
